Alarm Takeover Service

Switch Alarm Companies in Niagara, Hamilton & Toronto. Keep Your Equipment. Save Money.

An alarm system takeover is exactly what it sounds like. You already have a home security system. You just want a different company monitoring it. Force Security takes over your existing equipment, reprograms it to connect to our ULC-certified monitoring centre, and gets you protected again. In most cases, you keep all your sensors, wiring, and panel.

Maybe you're fed up with ADT's price increases. Maybe TELUS bought your provider and the service went downhill. Maybe you moved into a house or took over a business with a perfectly good alarm system just sitting on the wall doing nothing. Whatever the reason, you don't need to rip everything out and start over.

We've been doing alarm system takeovers across the Niagara Region, Hamilton, and Greater Toronto Area since 1988. Most takeovers are done in a single visit. You keep your sensors. You keep your wiring. We reprogram the panel, swap the communication module if needed, and connect everything to our monitoring centre. That's it.

The best part? We'll evaluate your current system for free. No obligation. We'll tell you honestly whether a takeover makes sense or if a fresh install with $0 upfront is the better move for your situation. We're not going to push a takeover if your equipment is too old to be reliable.

How It Works

How to Switch Alarm Companies in 3 Easy Steps

Switching alarm companies is way easier than most people think. Here's the whole process.

Step 1
🔍

We Evaluate Your System (Free)

One of our technicians visits your home and checks every piece of your existing equipment. Sensors, panel, wiring, communication module. We test everything and tell you exactly what can stay and what needs updating. This assessment costs you nothing.

Step 2
🔧

We Reprogram and Connect

We reprogram your panel with new codes, swap the communication module to cellular if it isn't already, and connect your system to our ULC-certified monitoring centre. If any sensors need replacing, we handle that too. Most takeovers are done in one visit.

Step 3
🛡️

You're Protected. No Contract Lock-In.

Your system is live and monitored 24/7. You get app access, push notifications, and trained operators watching your home around the clock. And you're not locked into a multi-year contract like you were with your last company.

Switching Providers

Switching from ADT, TELUS, Vivint, Bell, Reliance, or Alarm Guard?

Here's something a lot of homeowners don't know. TELUS now owns both ADT Canada and Vivint Canada. That means three of the biggest alarm companies in the country are actually one company. And a lot of their customers aren't happy about it.

Price increases after the merger. Support tickets that go nowhere. Technicians who are subcontractors, not actual employees. Long hold times. Sound familiar?

And they're not the only ones. Reliance Protectron customers across the GTA and Hamilton have been dealing with service decline ever since Reliance took over. Alarm Guard is notorious for locking people into long-term contracts they can't escape. Brinks inherited thousands of accounts from other companies, and half those customers don't even know how they ended up with Brinks. Rogers Smart Home bundles your security with your internet so you can't leave one without losing the other.

Force Security is the opposite of all that. We're a Canadian family-owned company that's been in business since 1988. Our technicians are our employees. They live in Niagara Falls, Hamilton, St. Catharines, and across the GTA. When you call us, you talk to someone who actually knows your system.

  • We take over DSC and Honeywell panels from ADT, Bell, Reliance Protectron, Brinks, and other providers
  • Free assessment to check if your equipment is compatible
  • No multi-year contract lock-in like TELUS (3 years), Vivint (42-60 months), or Alarm Guard (3-5 years)
  • Local technicians who show up when they say they will
  • ULC-certified alarm monitoring. Same level your insurance company requires
  • Canadian-owned. Your data stays in Canada. Not with a US corporation
  • No bundling tricks like Rogers or Bell. Your security stands on its own

Already out of contract? Even better. You can switch immediately with zero cancellation fees. If you're still under contract, we'll help you figure out the best timing and what it'll cost to leave early.

Equipment Compatibility

What Equipment Can You Keep?

Some alarm equipment is easy to take over. Some is proprietary and locked to one provider. Here's the honest breakdown so you know where you stand before we even show up.

Equipment Ownership

Do You Actually Own Your Alarm Equipment?

This trips people up all the time. You've been paying monthly for years. You figure the equipment is yours by now, right? Not always.

Dig up your original contract. If you paid for the equipment upfront (or financed it and paid it off), it's yours. If you're on one of those "free equipment" plans where the company provided everything at no cost, they probably still own it. Technically they could ask for it back when you cancel.

The reality? Even if your old company technically owns the panel, they almost never bother coming to get it. And the sensors, wiring, and other components are yours regardless. Worst case, we swap in a new panel and keep everything else.

  • Check your contract for "lease" vs "purchase" language
  • If you paid it off or bought upfront, you own it
  • "Free equipment" deals usually mean the company owns the hardware
  • Sensors and wiring are almost always yours to keep
  • We'll sort this out during your free assessment

Not sure about your contract terms? Bring whatever paperwork you have to the assessment. We've seen every type of contract from ADT, TELUS, Vivint, Bell, and Rogers. We'll help you figure out where you stand.

Cancellation Guide

How to Cancel Your Current Alarm Company

Every provider makes it a little different. Here's what you're dealing with depending on who you're trying to leave. For a full step-by-step guide with phone numbers and fees, read our complete guide to cancelling ADT, TELUS, and other alarm companies in Canada.

📺

Cancel ADT / TELUS Security

TELUS owns ADT Canada now. Call 1-888-222-3715 to cancel. You'll need to give 30 days notice. If you're under contract, expect an early termination fee (remaining months x monthly rate). Your DSC or Honeywell panel can almost always be taken over by us. Don't let them tell you the equipment won't work with another company.

📱

Cancel Vivint

Vivint contracts run 42-60 months. Call 1-800-216-5232 to cancel. They'll try hard to keep you. Early termination fee is the remaining balance on your equipment financing agreement. Their panels are proprietary, but we can reuse your wiring and sensors with new open-standard equipment.

🏠

Cancel Reliance Protectron

Call Reliance at 1-866-735-4262. Contracts are typically 3-5 years with auto-renewal. You need to cancel in writing before the renewal date or you're locked in for another term. Most Protectron systems use DSC panels. Easy takeover for us.

🚪

Cancel Alarm Guard

Alarm Guard contracts are 3-5 years with steep early cancellation fees. They're known for making it difficult to leave. Send your cancellation in writing and keep a copy. Most Alarm Guard systems use DSC panels, so a takeover is usually straightforward once you're out.

📡

Cancel Bell Smart Home / AlarmForce

Bell absorbed AlarmForce in 2018. Call 1-866-841-2905 to cancel. Equipment is proprietary and won't work with another provider. But that's fine. We install new equipment and reuse your existing wiring. You get a clean break from Bell and a system that isn't tied to your internet package.

🔌

Cancel Rogers Smart Home / Brinks

Rogers security is bundled with their internet and TV. Call 1-888-764-3771 to cancel. Brinks inherited a lot of contracts from Monitronics. Call 1-800-447-9239. Rogers equipment is proprietary (needs new install). Brinks usually uses DSC or 2GIG panels (easy takeover).

Not sure what to do? Bring your contract to the free assessment. We've helped hundreds of homeowners across Niagara Falls, Hamilton, and the GTA figure out the cheapest and fastest way to switch. Sometimes it's worth paying the cancellation fee. Sometimes it's better to wait a few months. We'll give you honest advice either way.

New Homeowners

Just Moved Into a House With an Alarm System?

This is one of the most common calls we get. You move in, there's a keypad on the wall and sensors on every door and window, but nobody knows the codes. The previous owner's monitoring company has no idea who you are. The system is just sitting there doing nothing.

Here's the good news. That equipment is probably perfectly fine. We come out, identify what you've got, reprogram everything with your own codes, and connect it to our monitoring centre. It's the same process as a takeover. Your new home might already be wired for full protection and you don't even know it.

Even better, we can add security cameras, smart locks, and video doorbells while we're there. Get everything set up in one visit so your new home is fully protected from day one.

  • Free assessment of your existing alarm equipment
  • Reprogram with your own codes and app access
  • Connect to 24/7 ULC-certified monitoring
  • Add cameras, smart locks, or sensors during the same visit
  • No long-term contract required

Business Alarm Takeover

We Take Over Commercial Systems Too

This isn't just for homeowners. If your business is locked into a contract with ADT, TELUS, Vivint, or Reliance, we can take over your commercial alarm system the same way. Retail stores, offices, warehouses, restaurants, medical clinics, industrial facilities. We've done takeovers on all of them.

Commercial systems often have more components. Multiple zones, access control panels, fire alarm monitoring, camera systems, and environmental sensors. We assess everything during the free evaluation and tell you exactly what transfers and what doesn't.

The process is the same. We reprogram your panel, connect to our monitoring centre, and you're switched over. Most commercial takeovers are done in a single visit. Your employees don't need to learn a new system. Your insurance stays valid with our ULC certification. And you're out of that contract for good.

Common Questions

Alarm Takeover Questions We Hear All the Time

What exactly is an alarm system takeover?

Instead of ripping out all your equipment and starting from scratch, we reprogram your current panel, swap the communication module if needed, and connect everything to our monitoring centre. You keep your sensors, wiring, and most of your equipment. It's faster and cheaper than a full new install, and we're usually in and out the same day.

How much does an alarm system takeover cost?

The assessment is always free. After that, it depends on what you've got. If your panel and sensors are in good shape and just need reprogramming, the cost is really low. If we need to swap the communication module or replace a few components, there's a small equipment cost. But we give you exact numbers after the assessment. No vague ranges. No surprises when the tech shows up.

Can you take over my ADT or TELUS system?

ADT systems? In most cases, yes. ADT installed thousands of DSC panels across Niagara Falls, Hamilton, and the GTA, and we work with DSC equipment every day. TELUS SmartHome is a different story. Their hardware is proprietary and locked to their service, so we can't simply reprogram it. But we can still help. We'll install new equipment in your home and reuse your existing wiring, which saves you a lot compared to starting from scratch. Either way, we get you off TELUS and onto local, no-contract monitoring.

What about Vivint systems? Can those be taken over?

Vivint uses some proprietary components, so it depends on your specific setup. Some Vivint panels can be reprogrammed. Others are locked to their service. If we can't reprogram your Vivint panel, we can often reuse your existing sensors and wiring with a new panel. The wiring is the expensive part of any security installation, so reusing it still saves you a lot. We'll know within minutes of looking at your system.

How long does it take to switch alarm companies?

The actual visit is about 1-3 hours for most homes. We reprogram the panel, test every sensor, set up your app access, and make sure everything talks to our monitoring centre properly. From first phone call to fully switched over, you're looking at a few days to a week. And we time it so there's zero gap in your coverage.

Do I own my alarm equipment or does my current company?

Check your original contract. If you paid for the equipment upfront or financed it and paid it off, you own it. If your company gave you "free equipment" as part of a monitoring deal, they might still own the panel. The good news is that sensors and wiring are almost always yours. And even if the company technically owns the panel, they rarely come to collect it. We'll help you sort this out during the assessment.

What if I'm still under contract with my current alarm company?

You can still switch, but you might owe a cancellation fee to your current provider. TELUS contracts are typically 3 years. Vivint contracts run 42-60 months. The fee is usually the remaining monthly payments on your contract. We'll help you calculate the exact cost and figure out the best timing. Sometimes it's worth paying the fee to stop overpaying every month. Sometimes it makes sense to wait.

Will there be a gap in my monitoring when I switch?

Nope. We time the whole thing so there's no gap at all. We get your system connected to our monitoring centre the same day we do the work. You don't cancel your old provider until we've confirmed everything is live and working on our end. Your home is never unmonitored.

Do I need the installer code from my old alarm company?

It helps, but it's not a dealbreaker. A lot of companies won't hand over the installer code when you leave. Classic move. Our techs can work around it on most panels. Sometimes we'll need to factory reset the panel and reprogram from scratch, which takes a bit longer but still gets it done.

I just moved into a house with an existing alarm system. Can you activate it?

This is one of the most common calls we get. You move into a house, there's a keypad on the wall and sensors on every door and window, but nobody knows the codes or who the monitoring company was. We can absolutely help. We'll come out, identify your equipment, reprogram everything with your own codes, and get it monitored. It's essentially the same process as a takeover. Your new home might already be wired for full protection.

Will my home insurance still give me a discount after switching?

Yep. Insurance companies care about ULC certification, not which company name is on the account. Our monitoring centre is ULC-certified, which is exactly what Canadian insurers look for. We'll give you a monitoring certificate to send to your insurance company. Most homeowners save 5-20% on their premiums.

Do you offer monitoring without a long-term contract?

Yes. We understand you're probably switching because you're tired of being locked in. We offer flexible monitoring agreements without the multi-year commitment that ADT, TELUS, and Vivint require. Stay with us because our service is good, not because a contract forces you to.

What if my alarm system is really old? Is a takeover still worth it?

Depends how old we're talking. Late 2000s or newer? The sensors and wiring are almost certainly fine. We might just need to swap the panel. A 1990s system with old phone-line communication? The wiring is still valuable, but you'll probably need a panel upgrade and cellular communicator. We'll be straight with you about whether a takeover actually saves you money or whether starting fresh makes more sense. The assessment is free either way.

What areas do you cover for alarm system takeovers?

We do alarm takeovers across the Niagara Region (Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Welland, Fort Erie, Port Colborne, Thorold), Hamilton area (Hamilton, Burlington, Ancaster, Stoney Creek, Grimsby), and the Greater Toronto Area (Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Oakville). If you're not sure if we cover your area, give us a call at 1-844-360-1234.

Can you take over a Reliance Protectron system?

Usually yes. Reliance acquired Protectron in 2016, and most of those legacy systems run on DSC panels. We reprogram the panel, swap the communicator to cellular if needed, and connect everything to our monitoring centre. If you're a Reliance customer in the GTA or Hamilton area, there's a good chance your equipment is fully compatible. The free assessment will confirm it.

How do I get out of my Alarm Guard contract?

Alarm Guard contracts are typically 3-5 years with auto-renewal. You need to send a written cancellation before your renewal date or you're locked in again. Check your contract for the exact notice period. If you're past the initial term, you can usually cancel with 30 days written notice. If you're still under contract, the early termination fee is usually the remaining months multiplied by your monthly rate. Bring your contract to our free assessment and we'll help you figure out the best timing.

Can you take over my Brinks alarm system?

In most cases, yes. Brinks (formerly Monitronics/MONI) typically uses DSC or 2GIG panels, both of which are open-standard equipment we work with all the time. A lot of Brinks customers had their accounts transferred from another company and didn't even choose Brinks. If that's you, we can take over the system and get you onto local, no-contract monitoring.

I have Rogers Smart Home or Bell security. Can I switch?

You can switch, but both Rogers and Bell use proprietary equipment that can't be reprogrammed for another provider. The good news is your existing wiring is still perfectly usable. We install new open-standard equipment (DSC or Honeywell) and connect it to your existing wires and sensor locations. You get a system that works independently from your internet provider. No more bundling games.
