ULC stands for Underwriters Laboratories of Canada. It's the standard that insurance companies look for. A ULC-certified monitoring centre has to meet strict requirements for staffing, backup power, redundant communication, and response times. They get audited regularly. The practical benefit for you? Your insurance company will give you a discount (usually 5-20% off your premiums) when your alarm is monitored by a ULC-certified centre. Many insurers won't give the discount otherwise.

Every alarm panel we install has a backup battery built in. Power goes out? Battery takes over. Most backups last 4-24 hours depending on the panel. If the battery starts getting low, the panel tells us. You're protected even when the rest of the street is dark.

We might need to swap the communication module to cellular, but the rest of your equipment usually stays. Nope. No multi-year contracts. TELUS, ADT, and Vivint all lock you in for 3-5 years. We've always thought that was backwards. If our service is good, you'll stick around. If it's not, you should be able to walk. We've been running it this way since 1988 and our retention numbers prove the approach works.
