Medical Alert Systems

Medical Alert Systems in Niagara, Hamilton & Toronto. Local Monitoring. Real Peace of Mind.

Force Security already monitors your home 24/7. Now we protect the people inside it too. Our medical alert systems connect you directly to our ULC-certified monitoring centre the moment you need help.

This isn't a box shipped from across the country with a sheet of instructions. A local technician comes to your home, sets everything up, tests the system with you, and makes sure you're comfortable before they leave. The same way we've been installing home security systems across the Niagara Region, Hamilton, and Toronto since 1988.

One press of a button. That's all it takes. You're instantly connected to a trained operator who stays on the line, assesses the situation, and dispatches help if you need it. Fall detection works even if you can't press the button at all.

Who It's For

Who Should Have a Medical Alert System?

If you're reading this, it's probably because you're worried about someone you love. Maybe it's a parent who lives alone. Maybe it's a spouse recovering from surgery. Maybe it's you, and you want to stay independent in your own home without your kids worrying constantly.

A medical alert system isn't about giving up independence. It's about keeping it. The people who benefit most are seniors living alone, anyone with a chronic condition like heart disease, diabetes, or epilepsy, people recovering from surgery at home, and anyone with a history of falls or mobility challenges.

You should seriously consider a medical alert if someone in your family:

  • Lives alone or spends significant time alone during the day
  • Has had a fall or near-fall in the past year
  • Takes medication that causes dizziness or balance issues
  • Has a chronic health condition that could cause a sudden emergency
  • Has family members who worry about their safety when they're not there

Features

What's Included With Your Medical Alert System

Every system comes with the features that actually matter. No upsells. No surprise add-on fees.

Automatic Fall Detection

Built-in accelerometers detect when you fall, even if you can't press the button. The alert goes to our monitoring centre automatically. This matters most when a fall causes loss of consciousness or confusion.

Waterproof Pendant

IP67 rated. Wear it in the shower. That's not optional. The bathroom is where most falls happen. If you have to take it off to shower, it's not protecting you when you need it most.

Two-Way Voice

Talk directly to our operator through the base unit or through the pendant itself. No need to reach a phone. No need to get up off the floor. The operator hears you and you hear them.

GPS Tracking

Mobile units work outside the home. Walking the dog, grocery shopping, visiting friends. If you press the button or the fall detector triggers, we know exactly where you are. Not just "at home."

24/7 ULC Monitoring

Same Canadian monitoring centre that watches home alarm systems. Trained operators around the clock. ULC-certified, which is the standard Canadian insurers recognize.

Battery Backup

System works during power outages. Cellular connection means no landline needed and no dependence on your internet. The battery backup keeps everything running for hours if the power goes out.

Why Force Security

Why Choose a Local Company for Medical Alerts?

Most medical alert companies ship you a box and wish you luck. You unpack it, plug it in yourself, hope you did it right, and call a 1-800 number if something goes wrong. That's fine if you're tech-savvy. But most people getting a medical alert aren't looking for a DIY project.

Force Security does it differently. A local technician comes to your home, installs the system, tests every component, and walks you through exactly how it works. They don't leave until you're comfortable. And if something ever needs service, that same technician is back within a day. Not a week. Not "we'll ship you a replacement."

  • A local technician sets it up in your home. Not shipped in a box.
  • Same company that monitors your alarm. One relationship. One bill.
  • Canadian-owned since 1988. Not a startup that might disappear next year.
  • ULC-certified monitoring. The standard Canadian insurers look for.
  • No overseas call centres. Canadian operators who speak your language.

Already a Force Security customer? Add medical alert to your existing monitoring for one simple monthly fee. Same account. Same app. Same company you already trust with your home.

Common Questions

Medical Alert System Questions

How much does a medical alert system cost?

Medical alert systems typically run between $25-55 per month depending on the features you need. A basic in-home system with pendant and 24/7 monitoring is on the lower end. Add fall detection, GPS tracking, or a mobile unit and the price goes up. We don't charge hidden equipment fees or activation costs. You pay a monthly monitoring fee and that's it. The best way to get exact pricing is a free in-home assessment where we figure out what you actually need.

Does OHIP cover medical alert systems?

No. OHIP does not cover medical alert systems. There's no provincial subsidy program for medical alert systems either. However, the cost may qualify as an eligible medical expense on your tax return through the CRA Medical Expense Tax Credit. Some private insurance plans cover part of the cost, and Veterans Affairs Canada has a program for eligible veterans. Talk to your accountant or tax preparer about claiming it. We provide all the documentation you need.

Are medical alert systems tax deductible in Canada?

They can be. The CRA allows medical alert system costs as an eligible medical expense under the Medical Expense Tax Credit (METC). This includes the monthly monitoring fee and any equipment costs. You'll need a prescription or written recommendation from a doctor confirming the medical necessity. Keep all your receipts and invoices. We provide annual statements that break down your costs for easy tax filing. Talk to your accountant about whether claiming this makes sense for your tax situation.

Do I need a landline for a medical alert system?

No. All our medical alert systems use cellular connectivity. No landline. No internet required. The system communicates directly with our monitoring centre over the cellular network. This is actually more reliable than a landline because there's no phone cord to cut and no internet outage that could knock you offline. If you do have a landline, great, but you don't need one.

How does fall detection work?

Fall detection uses built-in accelerometers and algorithms to detect the specific motion pattern of a fall. When the sensor detects a sudden downward acceleration followed by an impact and then no movement, it recognizes that as a likely fall and automatically sends an alert to our monitoring centre. You don't have to press anything. An operator connects to you within seconds to check if you're okay. No technology is 100% perfect at detecting every type of fall, but it catches the vast majority. And it's especially important for situations where a fall causes loss of consciousness.

What happens if I accidentally press the button?

Our monitoring centre calls you to verify. If it's a false alarm, you just tell them and they cancel the response. No penalty. No charge. No paramedics showing up unless you need them. False alarms happen. We'd rather you wear the device and accidentally press it ten times a month than not wear it because you're afraid of pressing it by mistake. That's the whole point of having a verification step before dispatch.

Can I wear the pendant in the shower?

Yes. You should. The pendant is IP67 waterproof rated, which means it handles full submersion. The bathroom is where most falls happen. Wet floors, stepping in and out of the tub, getting dizzy from hot water. If you take your pendant off to shower, you're unprotected during the most dangerous part of your day. Wear it. All the time. Shower, bath, swimming. It's built for it.

What's the range of the medical alert system?

For in-home systems, the pendant communicates with the base unit from anywhere in a typical house. That includes the yard, garage, and driveway. Range varies by model but most work up to 600-1,000 feet from the base unit. For our GPS-enabled mobile units, there's no range limit. They work anywhere there's cellular coverage. So you're protected at home, at the grocery store, walking in the park, or visiting friends across town.

How long does the battery last?

The pendant battery typically lasts 3-5 years before needing replacement. You don't charge it. It just works. The base unit plugs into a wall outlet and has a built-in battery backup that runs for 24-32 hours during a power outage. For GPS mobile units that you charge like a phone, battery life is usually 3-5 days between charges depending on usage and GPS activity.

What's the difference between a medical alert and a home security system?

Home security protects your property. Medical alert protects you. A home security system detects break-ins, fire, and carbon monoxide. A medical alert detects falls and medical emergencies, and connects you directly to a trained operator who dispatches help. Force Security offers both. When you bundle them, you get complete protection for your home and the people inside it. One system. One bill. One company you trust.

Can family members be notified when the alert is triggered?

Yes. When you set up your medical alert, you provide a list of emergency contacts. When the system triggers, our monitoring centre contacts emergency services first if needed, then immediately notifies your designated family members. You choose the order. You choose who gets called. Some family members prefer text notifications so they're informed without having to answer a phone call at 2am. We handle all of that.

Is there a medical alert system with no monthly fee?

There are devices you can buy outright with no monitoring fee. They call a family member's phone instead of a monitoring centre. The problem? Your family member has to answer. At 3am. Every time. And they have to know exactly what to do in a medical emergency. A professional monitoring centre has trained operators available 24/7 who know exactly which emergency service to dispatch and how to keep you calm until help arrives. The monthly fee pays for people who are always there. That's worth it.

How do I convince my parent to wear a medical alert?

This is one of the most common questions we hear. Start by framing it as independence, not dependence. A medical alert lets them stay in their own home longer instead of moving to assisted living. Let them choose the style. Pendant, wristband, or watch. Some look just like regular jewelry. Mention that it's waterproof so they never have to take it off. And remind them it's for your peace of mind too. We're happy to do a low-pressure in-home demo so they can see how simple and unobtrusive it is before committing to anything.

What happens during a power outage?

Your medical alert keeps working. The base unit has a built-in battery backup that powers the system for 24-32 hours. The cellular communicator runs on that same backup, so the connection to our monitoring centre stays active. Your pendant battery is independent and works regardless of power. If you also have a Force Security home alarm system, that has its own battery backup too. You're never unprotected because the hydro went out.

Can I bundle medical alert with my existing Force Security system?

Absolutely. If you're already a Force Security customer with 24/7 monitoring, adding a medical alert is simple. Same account. Same monitoring centre. Same technicians who already know your home. One monthly bill covers everything. And you'll save compared to having separate providers for home security and medical alert.
